POLICE:  If you or your loved one is in danger please call 911, explain the circumstances and ask for a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained officer. The CIT is a well-documented and successful model of improving police interactions with people experiencing acute episodes of mental illness. The training is designed to educate and prepare police officers who come into contact with people in crisis, to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and to respond effectively and appropriately to the individual.

This guide, published by the Thomas Jefferson Area CIT will help you prepare for calling for help if your family member is in crisis.

If you or your loved one is not in danger, call your local community services board first (Region Ten) or call your town's police hotline and ask for a CIT trained officer.
